The area was designated as the “Urbasa and Andía Natural Park” on February 27, 1997. It is located in the Tierra Estella – Lizarraldea region of Navarre and includes four main points of interest:
- Sierra de Urbasa (11,500 ha)
- Sierra de Andía (4,700 ha)
- Monte Limitaciones de las Améscoas (5,190 ha)
- Natural Reserve of the Urederra River Spring
The mountains that form the park, Urbasa and Andía, are medium-height mountains that create a geographical barrier between two major bioclimatic zones: the Atlantic and the Mediterranean.
The subsurface of the Natural Park is made up of limestone rocks formed from the remains of living beings that existed 65 million years ago in the sea that covered the area now occupied by the park. This determines the current landscape, both externally and internally, featuring characteristic karst relief.
Inside the park, you can discover caves such as the Cueva de los Cristinos, Akuandi, or Noriturri. Turquoise rivers like the famous Urederra spring and cliffs such as the Balcón de Pilatos, with walls over 200 meters high, as well as the Lizarraga cliffs, which offer spectacular views of the Ergoiena valley.
This privileged natural space offers a wide variety of hiking routes of different difficulties and lengths. From the easiest routes suitable for families to more challenging ones, such as the ascent to Monte Beriarin (San Donato), the highest point in the park at 1,492 meters.
